Is it possible to have a decent independent dating site?

Unjabbed.net was totally free to use from March 2023 to July 2024. Now we require a small annual payment to send the first message to other members. However it is free to reply to messages sent to you by other members. Once communication has been established between members, there is no longer any associated cost. We do not store financial details and we do not use automatic billing after your subscription expires. We don’t like getting billed automatically by other companies and so we don’t do it here.

A couple of people told us they have met using our website and either are now married or plan to get married. We have also had many people tell us they successfully formed relationships using our website or have been referred here by people who have done so.

A small number of members tell us there are not enough people in their age group in their city. We looked ourselves and found a small number of people in their age range with photographs and descriptions. However there were a much larger number of people with no descriptions and no photos, which I assume weren’t taken into consideration.

We do occasionally email people and remind them to fill in their descriptions. Some heed our advice and some do not.

It is a pity there is a vicious cycle of people not bothering to fill in their profiles, which causes other people to end up deleting their accounts here, instead of actually using our website for its intended purpose. When members pay for subscriptions or donate money to us it gives us the funds to take out more advertising.

Well this is what it looks like! This website is a part-time venture with limited funds. Unlike major social media sites we don’t get money from the stock market, government, university grants, billionaires and government contracts. Free often isn’t really free and the major social media sites and messenger apps may well be spying on you. In some cases it is possible to work around this and minimise the intrusions.

The take-home point here is that you really do need to write something for your headline and description. Ideally your description should be 40 characters or more to ensure your profile appears under New Entrants and occasionally under Featured Profiles. If you don’t want to add a photograph of yourself, you can easily provide some of churches, flowers, trees etc. Alternatively use a photograph of yourself taken from an obscure angle or wearing sunglasses and a hat. It is quite possible to add photos and write something about yourself without your privacy being harmed. Even if there aren’t people from your city at the moment, there might be in a few months.
