Fake profiles are always a risk on websites aiming to connect people. The aim of this website is to bring local people together – at least those living in neighbouring cities or countries. Some members tell us they are only interested in meeting local people. Their views should be respected.
Verification is easy. Just ask your correspondent to upload a selfie photograph where a piece of paper – with today’s date written on it – is visible. A recent newspaper can substitute for the paper. Our website allows photographs to be uploaded to both a main public gallery and a private gallery. Only approved people (by clicking the My Gallery button on the bottom of their profile) can see the contents of private galleries. Once you have seen the new photograph, your correspondent can delete it.
There are many different ways to achieve the same goals. Maybe you have a preferred messaging app. Some of these apps have been created with government or stock market money at some point. I hear Session is one of the more respected ones and is based on code from the other messaging app Signal. The clues are in the names! I have used Session myself. It was slow on the first day I used it, but after that it was fine. It might not be a good idea to exchange real telephone numbers with someone straight way.
If you don’t like someone or just don’t like international correspondence, just click the Block button on their profile. You may have to click the ^ button first to reveal it.
If an account here does not look right, we will either block it from messaging or delete it as appropriate. We apologise for any false positives. Our enquiries have revealed the scammers creating fake profiles are located in Bangladesh.
The people who create fake profiles are less likely to give their correct location. A weak method of proving your profile is genuine – but better than nothing – would be to travel 30 minutes from home, take a photograph of a park or street and upload it as one of your profile photos. A piece of paper with a recent date on it – in the street photo – would increase its validity. If you have any suspicions please contact us.
Don’t let these jokers destroy the usefulness of the Internet. It is simple and fast to upload a selfie photograph with a handwritten date in view, either to us or your correspondent.
